Get found inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews

Generative engine optimization is the work of getting a business named inside AI assistant answers — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. Hitman Marketing does this for Clearwater and Pinellas County businesses by fixing the data sources those assistants actually read, then building content they can extract.

Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?

ChatGPT most likely skips your business because the records it reads are thin, contradictory, or filed under a category nobody chose. ChatGPT surfaces local businesses primarily from Foursquare, Siri from Apple Business Connect, Copilot from Bing Places. Almost every local agency optimizes Google Business Profile alone, which is not the primary source any of those three read.

That gap is the widest supply-and-demand mismatch in search right now. Buyers moved to the assistants inside a single year; what the assistants read is a listing layer of generic categories and parent-level nodes — records that exist, and do not say what the business actually does. Roughly one local business in a hundred earns a ChatGPT recommendation today — the measured rates for every assistant, with sources, are compiled on our statistics page.

It is a solvable problem, and an unglamorous one. The first month of this work is mostly moving records onto the category that describes the business, and making its facts agree with themselves everywhere they appear.

What actually gets a business cited by AI?

Off-site mentions get a business cited by AI, not on-page tricks. Ahrefs' correlation work ranks video presence and branded web mentions far above backlinks as predictors of AI visibility, so Hitman Marketing spends the earned budget on being talked about elsewhere before it spends anything on links.

The other half is mechanical. AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript, so a site rendered client-side is invisible no matter how good the content is. So is a site whose firewall is quietly blocking OAI-SearchBot, which turns out to be the real cause of a large share of "we're not cited" diagnoses.

What does not work, despite what you have been sold?

Three tactics sold hard in this category do not work: llms.txt files, FAQ schema, and training-data placement. None of the three survives controlled testing, and an agency that leads with any of them is reselling a checklist it has not verified. The studies, sample sizes, and effect sizes are laid out in our guide.

How do you measure AI visibility honestly?

AI visibility is measured across hundreds of prompts as a trend, never as a single ranking. These systems are non-deterministic — the same prompt returns different answers to different people at different times — so any report showing a stable rank position for one query is misrepresenting how the technology works.

What does the first 90 days look like?

The first 90 days of GEO work run listings first, because that is where the return is. Then crawler access and rendering, then content restructured so answers can be extracted, then measurement. Visible movement usually starts in weeks two to six, which is unusually fast for search work.

  • Weeks 1–2 — Move the Bing Places record Copilot reads onto the category node that describes the business, and audit Google Business Profile against it. Make the name, address, phone, hours, and categories byte-identical everywhere.
  • Weeks 2–4 — Verify AI crawlers can reach and render the site. Check the firewall is not blocking them. Fix client-side rendering.
  • Weeks 3–8 — Restructure the pages that matter around question-form headings with self-contained answers. Add the statistics and comparisons that get extracted.
  • Weeks 4–12 — Entity work: consistent identity across every profile, Wikidata where the notability bar is cleared, and the earned-mention program that actually moves the needle.
  • Ongoing — Monthly prompt panel across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Mode and Copilot, reported as a trend with the honest caveats attached.

AI Search (GEO) questions

Is GEO different from SEO, or is it the same thing rebranded?
The large majority of it is excellent SEO — crawlability, rankings, entity clarity, earned mentions. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling. The genuinely distinct parts are the non-Google data layer that feeds ChatGPT and Siri, passage-level content structure, and a measurement approach that accounts for non-determinism.

Can you guarantee my business will show up in ChatGPT?
No, and nobody honestly can. These systems are non-deterministic and change without notice. What we commit to is specific and checkable: crawler accessibility, listings that agree with each other and with the site across every source the assistants read, extraction-ready page structure, earned mentions in the domains your category actually gets cited from, and measured share of voice.
Is AI search big enough yet to be worth paying for?
AI search is small in volume and extreme in intent — a thin stream of visitors who arrive already holding a recommendation, converting at a large multiple of ordinary organic traffic. The relevant point for a local business is scarcity: assistants can name only a sliver of the businesses in any category, and the cost of entry rises as that changes.

Do I need to block AI crawlers to protect my content?
For a lead-generation business, no — a citation is worth far more than the bandwidth, and blocking the retrieval bots removes you from answers entirely. The calculation is genuinely different for ad-monetised publishers, who have a real case for restricting training crawlers. We do not apply one policy to both.
How is this reported?
A monthly one-page report: share of voice across your prompt panel by assistant, citation counts from Bing Webmaster Tools, listing health on Bing Places and Google Business Profile, and AI referral sessions and conversions in GA4 — with the under-counting caveat stated every time rather than buried.
