Content strategy for local businesses

Content strategy decides what a business publishes, for which buyer question, in what structure, and on what refresh schedule. For Clearwater businesses that means fewer, better pages: answer-first structure, sourced statistics, and original local data — because word count is irrelevant to citation and thin volume now suppresses whole domains.

What content actually gets cited by AI assistants?

Content with statistics, sources, and structure. The original generative engine optimization research measured visibility gains of up to 40%, with adding statistics and citing sources among its strongest edits. Self-contained passages of roughly 130 to 270 words under question-form headings get extracted most cleanly.

  • Every heading phrased as a question a buyer would type, in sequence, so retrievers get clean passage boundaries.
  • The answer in the first 40 to 60 words, then the evidence: a statistic with attribution, a comparison, or an honest caveat.
  • Comparison tables, which parse cleanly into structured answers.
  • Original first-party local data: in Yext's analysis of 17.2 million citations, first-party pages earned 4.31 citations per cited URL against 2.46 for directory listings.

How much content should a local business publish?

Less than most agencies sell, at higher quality. Word count is statistically irrelevant to AI citation — the correlation is close enough to zero to ignore — and Google's scaled-content policy targets exactly the mass-produced pages that volume-based retainers generate. One useful page a month beats four thin ones.

Should old content be updated or replaced?

Updated, on a schedule, before new topics get chased. Ahrefs measured AI-cited URLs running about 25.7% fresher by publication date than the organic top ten — a real effect, though smaller than the inflated figures that circulate. A six-month refresh rotation on the pages that matter outperforms most net-new publishing.

The refresh has to be substantive: updated numbers, sharpened answers, pruned padding, and a modified date that reflects genuine change. Changing the date without changing the page is detectable and buys nothing.

Common questions

Do you write content with AI?
For drafting, yes; for publishing unedited output, no. Google's spam policy names using generative tools to produce many pages without adding value as scaled content abuse, and the assessment now operates sitewide. Every page here ships with real local specifics, a named author, and editing by a person who knows the market — that added value is the whole point.
What topics work for a local service business?
The ones competitors will not touch: real published pricing, honest comparisons that name names, original local data, and seasonal preparedness content written before the season rather than during it. These work because they answer what buyers actually ask and because scarcity makes them citable — an AI assistant quotes the one source that exists.

Why not publish a lot and see what ranks?
Because the downside is no longer contained to the pages that fail. Google's helpful-content assessment operates sitewide, so a pattern of thin pages can suppress an entire domain, including the good pages. Spray-and-pray was a defensible tactic once; it is now a way to spend money making a website worse.
